Publication date:

The Attorney General for Northern Ireland, Dame Brenda King and Attorney General for Ireland Rossa Fanning SC recently collaborated to open and close a talk on Sports Law which was organised by The Bar of Ireland and the Sports Law Bar Association of Ireland Committee.

The informal discussion was an opportunity for former athletes to discuss their experiences and for legal representatives to better understand the issues faced by athletes when dealing with disciplinary or legal issues.

There were also contributions from two-time Irish Olympic bronze medallist boxer Paddy Barnes [pictured above] and Irish hockey Olympian Lizzie Colvin. Mr Conor Sally, Cathaoirleach/Chairman of Omagh St Enda’s GAA and Solicitor also spoke at the event.

Attorney General King highlighted the important role which accessible sport plays in our society and the close link between a level playing field and the evolution of law including fair hearings, the accessibility and certainty of the rules being applied, the transparency of decision making and the objective standing of the decision maker.
