OAGNI Freedom of Informatin and Accessing Information Statement

Freedom of Information and Accessing Information

The Office of the Attorney General for Northern Ireland (OAGNI) seeks to be open and accountable and believes that public access to our information improves understanding of our business. We publish information on what we do on this website, which you can access using the links or search facility on our home page. However, there may be other issues about which you would like further information, and in this part of our website we explain how you can get such information.

Freedom of Information

The objective of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI Act) is to open up public authorities and other organisations which carry out public functions.

Firstly the FOI Act empowers people, giving everyone a general right of access to the information they want to see, that is held by public authorities in the UK, subject to certain exemptions.

Secondly it places a statutory duty on bodies covered by the Act to make certain information publicly available as a matter of course. All public bodies must adopt a Publication Scheme for the publication of information, and make it easily accessible to the public. The Information Commissioner (who is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with the FOI Act) has drawn up a Model Publication Scheme [external link] for public sector organisations. The OAGNI has adopted and committed to this Model Publication Scheme.

Accessing Information

If the information you require is not available via the website you may make a request for the information to the Information Manager in writing or via email. Further information can be found in the Public Information Leaflet.

It would be useful in any such request if you would:

  • Include your name, address and contact number;
  • Describe in as much detail as possible the information that you require; and

State if you have any preference for the format in which the information should be supplied.
